A routine walk through a busy courthouse hallway quickly became an unexpected lesson about assumptions and professional respect.
An older courthouse employee was carrying important case folders toward a courtroom when a police officer suddenly stopped him. The officer asked where he was going and demanded proof that he was authorized to enter the restricted area.
Remaining calm, the employee explained that he worked at the courthouse and pointed to the identification badge clearly displayed on his clothing. He also explained that the folders contained official documents from his department.
Still unconvinced, the officer told him he could not continue until everything was verified. The employee questioned why courthouse business was being delayed when his identification was already available.
Moments later, a judge approached and asked what had caused the interruption. After hearing the officer’s explanation, she immediately recognized the employee.
She explained that he had served the courthouse for more than 30 years and was the Senior Courthouse Operations Director.
The officer was visibly surprised by the revelation.
Rather than escalating the situation, the director offered a simple reminder: people deserve to be approached with fairness and professionalism before conclusions are made.
The encounter became a powerful lesson about communication, patience, and treating everyone with respect.
