An elderly woman wearing a worn coat quietly entered a luxury watch store and approached one of the display cases. She pointed toward an elegant watch and politely asked if she could see it.
Instead of helping her, the salesman looked at her clothing and immediately made an assumption.
“That watch? Ma’am, you couldn’t possibly afford it,” he replied.
The woman calmly explained that she had only asked to see the watch, but the salesman continued dismissing her. He told her the store wasn’t for people who were simply looking and suggested that the watch was worth more than everything she was wearing.
“You should stop judging people,” she told him.
Moments later, another employee approached and immediately recognized the woman. His expression changed completely.
“She’s the owner of this company,” he revealed.
The salesman was speechless. The woman then explained that she had actually come to purchase the watch. Suddenly embarrassed, the salesman apologized, saying he had no idea who she was.
But her response carried the real lesson.
Respect shouldn’t depend on someone’s position, wealth, or appearance. The salesman had seen worn clothes and made assumptions about her worth. That day, he learned why every customer deserves the same courtesy from the moment they walk through the door.
