An older man walked into an elegant watch boutique and quietly admired one of the premium timepieces displayed behind the glass. Before he could ask a question, an employee approached and quickly made assumptions based on his simple clothing.
“Sir, that watch is not for window shopping,” the employee said, suggesting that he look somewhere else.
The visitor remained calm. “I didn’t come here to window shop,” he replied.
Instead of asking how he could help, the employee challenged him to prove he could afford the watch. He even suggested that continuing the conversation would be a waste of time.
The older man calmly warned him that he had no idea who he was speaking to. The employee dismissed the comment and asked him to leave.
Moments later, another staff member arrived and immediately recognized the visitor. The atmosphere changed.
“You know this man?” the employee asked.
“Of course,” came the surprising response. “He founded this company.”
Realizing his mistake, the employee apologized and admitted that he had not known who the visitor was.
But the founder’s response carried the real lesson: respect should never depend on someone’s title, wealth, or appearance.
Every customer deserves courtesy from the moment they walk through the door.
