Rain poured across the quiet cemetery as an elderly man approached the iron gates, carrying an old black-and-white photograph. He had come for a memorial and hoped to pay tribute to someone who had once meant a great deal to him.
Before he could continue, a security guard stopped him and asked him to step away from the restricted entrance. The elderly visitor calmly explained that he had been invited and was not there to cause any problems. Still, the guard remained firm and refused to let him through.
Rather than argue, the man simply asked to be treated with respect. Disappointed, he looked down at the photograph and prepared to leave.
Then a military officer appeared among the gravestones and hurried toward the gate. He called for the elderly man to wait.
“Sir, we’ve been looking everywhere for you,” the officer explained.
The visitor quietly replied that he had been unable to get through the gate.
The officer then explained the importance of the visit. The elderly man had come to honor his closest friend and remember the people he had served beside many years earlier.
The moment offered a simple reminder: security procedures matter, but courtesy matters too. Asking questions calmly and treating every visitor with dignity can prevent misunderstandings.
