He Ordered Her Out of the Lobby—Unaware She Was the Director’s Mother

An elderly woman settled into a lobby chair, placing her handbag beside her feet. She had arrived early to meet her daughter.

“You can’t camp here,” a security guard said. “Take your things outside.”

“I’m waiting for my daughter. Please let me sit.”

“Then wait outside.”

When she struggled to rise, he took her arm.

“Please let go,” she said. “I can’t stand that fast.”

Before he could answer, a woman stepped out of the elevator.

“Take your hand off her. Now.”

The guard immediately released his grip.

“Director, I was just…”

“Step away.”

She knelt beside the visitor.

“Mom, did he hurt you?”

The guard’s expression changed.

“He wouldn’t let me wait,” her mother replied.

The director stood.

“You’re suspended from duty pending an investigation. Every complaint will be reviewed.”

“I’m sorry, ma’am,” he said, suddenly careful with every word.

The older woman looked up at him.

“I asked for a chair. Why did you need to know my daughter’s job?”

He opened his mouth, then lowered his eyes.

Her daughter picked up the handbag and offered her an arm.

“Take your time, Mom.”

This time, nobody hurried her.

She deserved that same patience before anyone recognized her daughter.
