*Fictional story*
“You’re not boarding this flight,” the gate agent said, looking at the man’s faded jacket.
He glanced at the departure screen. Final boarding.
“My ticket is valid.”
“Then take your complaint to customer service.”
Before he could answer, she tore his boarding pass in half and dropped the pieces beside her keyboard. The entire boarding line went quiet.
For a moment, he simply stared at the paper. Then he placed his small canvas bag on the counter.
“Please call the airport director.”
She folded her arms. “He won’t change the rules for you.”
“I’m asking you to check them.”
A nearby employee picked up the phone. Minutes later, the director arrived, already listening to the agent’s explanation.
“This passenger was causing trouble. I removed him from boarding.”
The director looked at the man, then at the torn pass.
“Mr. Chairman?”
The agent’s hand slipped from the counter.
“Is there a problem with his reservation?” the director asked.
She checked the screen. “No.”
“His identification?”
“No.”
“Then why was he denied boarding?”
No answer came.
The director turned to the supervisor. “This is the man who founded this airport. Reissue his pass. Suspend her gate access pending a review.”
The man lifted one hand.
“Please make sure the report includes what happened before you recognized me.”
The director nodded.
As a fresh boarding pass emerged from the printer, the agent whispered, “If I’d known who you were…”
He picked up the two torn pieces.
“What would you have done differently?”
She looked toward the waiting passengers. A young father held a sleeping child. A cleaner stood nearby with her trolley.
“I would have checked your ticket,” she said.
He placed the scraps beside the printer.
“Start there with the next person.”
Then he collected his bag and walked toward the aircraft.
