An older woman walked into the executive banking area carrying a simple brown bag, expecting an ordinary professional visit. Before she could continue, an employee stepped in front of her and told her that VIP banking was not for her.
The woman calmly asked why she was being stopped. Instead of checking her credentials, the employee assumed she did not belong and instructed her to use the regular branch. Even when a colleague tried to intervene, he refused to reconsider his decision.
Rather than arguing, the woman asked one unexpected question: “Who signed your employment contract?”
The employee looked confused. Then she reached into her bag and produced an executive ownership card identifying her as an owner and member of the bank’s board of directors.
The atmosphere immediately changed.
“Because I signed it,” she explained calmly.
Realizing his mistake, the employee apologized and admitted that he had not known who she was. But her response carried the real lesson: her identity should never have determined whether she received basic courtesy.
She then announced that the bank would review how every customer was treated, regardless of clothing, appearance, or status.
Respect should come before titles. Everyone deserves professional and considerate treatment from the moment they walk through the door.
